program description

on this course, students will learn about bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses, agents that have a huge impact on human health and disease, the environment, and chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries. 

in their first year, students will study topics that are fundamental to microbiology, including bacteriology, biochemistry and genetics, ensuring them have a solid foundation upon which to build the rest of their degree. 

during their second year, students will get the option to study food analysis and quality control, food microbiology, immunology, pathology and pharmacology. in these modules, they'll explore topics like how to improve the nutritional and eating quality of food products, and foodborne illness, food spoilage and food preservation.  

in their third year, students will study biomedical microbial products, human microbial diseases, and the epidemiology of infectious diseases. they can also choose to explore topics such as animal infectious diseases, gene expression, immunohaematology, and pathogenesis and therapeutics of cancer. students will also complete a research project, bringing together all the practical, analytical, and presentation skills they've developed.
