the classical languages major trains students to read the great authors of classical antiquity (e.g., homer, plato, vergil, sappho, saint augustine) in the original language and prepares them for graduate study in classics and for teaching in some private schools.
earning a degree in classics is a great way to get a general humanities education. employers want to hire imaginative and creative people who can understand and explain concepts and abstractions and who are good writers and close readers - just the skills students develop while studying classics.
in recent years, the university of kansas classics majors have gone on to become teachers and professors not just in classics but in related fields such as history and comparative literature. many have also gone on to law school and medical school.
the classical languages major in particular prepares students to do graduate work in classics, comparative literature, or archaeology (archaeologists must have an advanced knowledge of both greek and latin). students who wish to teach latin in secondary schools can also combine this major with a degree in the school of education.
