despite the efforts of multilateral organizations, governments and philanthropists, many people still live in extreme poverty – often without adequate clean water, food or access to healthcare. as inequality continues to increase around the world, there is a desperate need for more skilled professionals who understand the complexities of the development sector and who can help fight this alarming trend.

for applicants who are passionate about supporting the world's most vulnerable communities, la trobe university's master of international development will give them a strong foundations to advance their career in the humanitarian and development sector.

students will build a meaningful career and learn how to create sustainable, positive change in areas where people need it most. students will learn from experienced experts as they choose from a wide range of specializations and specially curated electives, allowing them to pursue their passion.

students will learn how to build strong relationships in the development sector and have the opportunity to undertake an internship or placement with a local or international development organization, helping them to further build their skills and networks.

students will learn:
  • how to design and deliver development projects - understand how to work in partnership with local communities, and learn how to create projects that address inequality.
  • policy and practice frameworks - develop the knowledge and skills they need to successfully operate in the development sector.
  • how to drive social change - from grassroots activism to governmental policy, they will learn how to engage with individuals, communities and organizations to create positive change.
  • development sector best practice - become familiar with the tools and techniques commonly found in development practice, including log frames, project proposals and 'theory of change' documents.
