the fiu global first year program combines credit-bearing courses from the first year of a student’s degree with additional support services, instruction tailored to their academic and language level, and cultural experiences, helping ensure their future success. furthermore, the global first year experience provides more than academic, language, and cultural growth. with the included career accelerator program, students can also gain valuable professional skills that prepare them for a successful career.

the career accelerator is designed specifically for international students:

four semesters of professional development and career guidance

skills-based training and opportunities for exclusive internships

unique workshops, real-world experiences, and cross-cultural group work

the social work profession is geared towards preventing and ameliorating social problems to enhance the quality of human life. social work practice requires a high level of dedication, skill, and knowledge. in the programs, students learn to intervene with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, evaluate the effects of those interventions, as well as advocate for human rights and social and economic justice. with this training, graduates are able to make important impacts in communities and contribute substantially to the field of social work. the programs put an emphasis on achieving a comprehensive, developmental, and community-oriented understanding of the needs facing urban societies in rapidly changing social, political, economic, and cultural conditions. partnerships with over a hundred community agencies throughout miami-dade, broward, palm beach, and monroe counties are maintained.

the undergraduate social work program is committed to preparing students for generalist practice in diverse, urban communities, locally and globally, with an emphasis on understanding and serving individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. grounded in the professional social work values and ethics, the program educates students with skills and knowledge based on scientific inquiry and collaborative engagement to promote human and community well-being.
