Progression Summary
This degree includes a one-year work placement in industry between your second and final year. Interested in the role of accounting and finance in business and society? Want to develop the skills and knowledge that, on graduating, will be immediately transferable to the business environment? Then come study our BSc Accounting and Finance degree, run by our Henley Business School that ranks 15th in the UK for Accounting and Finance (Complete University Guide, 2018). You will learn about the core areas of financial reporting and management accounting, gain a critical grasp of core theory and build extensive professional skills involving application and analysis. In our state-of-the-art dealing room, you will get to apply the theory using computer trading simulations and spreadsheet modelling. The course also focuses on financial markets, corporate finance, business strategy and ethical considerations. Having acquired a sound understanding of business concepts in your first year, you can go on to specialise in areas of particular interest to you through the more advanced modules available in your second and final years. Depending on your choice of modules, you may be able to benefit from a limited number of exemptions from professional accountancy exams in the future, subject to achieving the required grades. There is the opportunity to spend a year at our campus in Malaysia where in addition to continuing your studies you will gain an international perspective and cultural experience. There is also the added bonus of reduced fees for that year. The University of Reading encourages students to consider work placements as part of their studies, and an optional work placement module can be taken in the third year of this degree. This can help enhance your CV and future graduate employment prospects, help you to build a professional network and provide a valuable opportunity to apply and further develop your knowledge and skills. On completion of this degree, you could go on to a career working with accountancy firms, financial institutions or large multinational enterprises. There are however many other routes open to you including accounting and professional services, banking, consultancy, finance, human resources, IT, investment banking, marketing, operations and, of course, general management.
