Progression Summary

this course will enable you to think about technology in new ways, placing users at the very heart of digital design. you will gain a deep understanding of users' needs, and feed that understanding into the design of engaging user experiences. the msc human-computer interaction design (hcid) course will provide you with an effective mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, a strong user-centred ethos, and the skills to become the users’ advocate when designing and evaluating interactive systems and services. our graduates go into professional roles as user experience (ux) practitioners, predominantly as user researchers and ux designers. our alumni are currently working at companies like google, microsoft, bbc, nintendo, accenture, trainline, the british library, and the national archives. course highlights: one of the longest-established hci programmes in the uk, join one of the hundreds of successful graduates since 2004 who have used the msc in hci design at city st george's to kick-start or energise their ux career. strong industry connections, including regular seminars with ux professionals, portfolio review sessions, thriving alumni network, annual open day event, and industry partnerships during course work (e.g. with the royal opera house and the spitalfields city farm). focus on ethical design, including specialised modules on design justice, inclusive design and participatory design methods. forwards-facing focus on embracing ai technologies for hci responsibly, in ways that will enhance your ux capabilities and help you differentiate yourself in an industry that is undergoing rapid transformation. great facilities, with access to city interaction lab, a purpose-built 75m2 user testing facility; and the ar/vr learning centre , a new space for exploring immersive technologies. inspiring, supportive final project supervision and the potential for academic publication. examples include: stronger than yesterday: investigating peoples' experiences of view strengthening on social media “i try to find a balance”: investigating strategies for self-regulating covid news consumption (awarded best european student paper, asis&t 2022) "a study of ux practitioners roles in designing real-world, enterprise ml systems" award you can select to apply for one of the available exit points for this course. master of science (msc) who is this course for? do you get annoyed when you interact with unnecessarily complicated technology? do you want to be able to design technology in ways that empower users? do you want to be a user advocate in today's technology-driven world? if so then this course is ideal for you. you’ll learn about designing technology and creating interactive systems that meet user needs and that are easy-to-use, engaging and useful. the course will help you to ensure that the technology and products you and others design truly meet the needs of the people using them.

an upper second-class honours degree in any subject, the equivalent from an international institution or three-plus years of ux-related industry experience a practical background in computing technologies is useful, but not essential previous experience in human-computer interaction or user experience design is not necessary programming experience is not necessary.
