the english language certificate program (elcp) is an intensive academic english program designed to prepare you for academic success. this program is intended for students meeting all academic admission requirements to the university of guelph. students will learn the skills they need to succeed in university studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels. the 7-week terms include 25 hours of class plus one hour with conversation peer tutors per week. additional support is available through the elp buddy program, where elp students are paired with university of guelph student volunteers. 

when students successfully complete the advanced level of the elcp, they will earn the university of guelph certificate of english proficiency. this certificate meets the english proficiency requirements for admission to the university of guelph. students will not be required to write toefl/ielts for admission to their academic program.

a few days prior to the start of the program, students will be tested for placement into the appropriate english class level. applicants must have some knowledge of basic english (a1-a2 cefr).

note: students applying for conditional admission to an academic program are required to submit two applications (one to the elcp program and one to their academic program), and must pay two application fees. total application fee for students seeking conditional admission via the elcp will be $240.
