Progression Summary

the agricultural industry has for years drawn on scientific understanding and technical expertise to sustain the efficient production of crops and livestock. today, that scientific input is needed more than ever as the agricultural sector faces the challenges of climate change and the rising demands for food and fuel by the growing global population. in the coming decades we need to increase crop yields, improve their resistance to pests, diseases and environmental stress and develop sustainable cropping systems that minimise greenhouse gas emissions and safeguard soils and wildlife biodiversity. we need to increase the efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of livestock production systems, raise standards of animal welfare and control livestock disease epidemics. furthermore, we need to improve the quality and safety of our food supplies and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels by harnessing algae and plant biomass to provide renewable sources of energy and raw materials. the agricultural bioscience course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and scientific skills to help meet these challenges. the course focuses particularly on animal and plant sciences and how this biological knowledge and understanding can be applied to improve the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural systems. the course prepares students for a broad spectrum of career opportunities, from laboratory-based research jobs to consultancy positions involving outdoor field-work and regular site visits. former agricultural bioscience graduates have an excellent track record of gaining relevant employment.
