Progression Summary
This MA will prepare you for an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded PhD in applied linguistics. It provides research training and interdisciplinary insight into the study of applied linguistics. The course follows ESRC postgraduate training guidelines. **September 2021 entry– important application information** This course is only available if you’re applying through the Northern Ireland and North East Doctoral Training Partnership (NINE DTP). Through the course you will achieve a critical conceptual understanding of practice, thought, evidence and theory; gain skills, knowledge and understanding to engage with and evaluate research and theory; undertake advanced applied research, contributing to the development of new techniques, ideas or approaches; make informed judgements on complex issues in specialist fields, often in the absence of complete data; communicate your ideas and conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences. You will consolidate your learning through a research project. This might include a portfolio of critical literature reviews; case reports; pilot experiments; draft journal articles; a dissertation. The course is for those accepted onto a 1+3 ESRC funded PhD programme. The course is only available to EU citizens. FACILITIES: While studying in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences you'll have access to facilities and a growing collection of online resources, including a well-stocked Education Resource Centre; Language Analysis Lab; a phonetics lab; an audio-video lab; a recording studio.
